Based on two models focussing on the analysis of the spatial components of the fishing effort distribution, we present a global approach which has been formalised in order to develop a computerized simulation tool called FAST (Fishing Activity Simulation Tool), distributed as an extension of ESRI ArcView GIS Software. FAST defines a logical framework under which the knowledge about fishing effort exerted by a homogeneous fleet segment can be translated into maps. The principle of the model is to define effort distribution as functions of geo-referenced variables which are considered as factors contributing or affecting the area actually exploited by the fleet segment. The nominal effort is distributed on each spatial unit, proportionally to the “effort” calculated by the model at that location.

Small-Scale Spatial Variation in Population Dynamics and Fishermen Response in a Coastal Marine Fishery

A major challenge for small-scale fisheries management is high spatial variability in the demography and life history characteristics of target species. Implementation of local management actions that can reduce overfishing and maximize yields requires quantifying ecological heterogeneity at small spatial scales and is therefore limited by available resources and data. Collaborative fisheries r...

Stocks status of kilka in Iranian waters of the Caspian Sea

The present study considered the situation of kilka stocks in last decades by using overfished biomass threshold, fishing effort ratio and fishing mortality proxy during 1991-2010. The CPUE index of anchovy and mixed-species of kilka indicated an undepleted from 1991 to 2000. In 2000, the CPUE ratio declined to close to the “in danger” region, and subsequently collapsed to “overfished” region f...

Study on the fishing performance of an alternative tubular-type pot for the common octopus, Octopus minor, in Korean coastal waters

We aimed to develop alternative fishing gear for catching the common octopus, to decrease the use of bait and operating costs in comparison to commercial net pots. A tubular-type pot was designed, and behavioral responses of the common octopus were experimentally monitored in tank and replicated 10 times to compare fishing performances between 300 experimental and 300 commercial net pots in the...
